opinion here. you are going to see joe biden come out with his report on tuesday. i am sure the president will mention it in the inaugural address and really push it in the state of the union address. i still get the impression from talking to candidates head of the liberal think tank one of the groups involved. the president will rebegin up his campaign. i think you will see this on a lot of issues to get a lot of like minded people to raise money to put pressure on congressmen by public education camps saying voters i think they are going to go smaller rather than bigger. i think i will propose stop on weapons ban. they will get through a universal background check. 40 percent of all of the guns sold are not subject to any check. i think one of the arguments they will make is and you could argue it right or wrong. one of the arguments they will make if the problem isn't the weapon but the person holding the weapon why shouldn't there be any check when someone buys a gun they don't have mental health problems. >> i hear you have senator blumenthal also. you had a chance to talk to him. i

a sweeping list of proposals aimed at reducing gun violence as part of a package put together by joe biden and his white house task force. senior administration officials tell nbc news the biggest proposals include universal background checks, a ban on high-capacity magazines, anything that carries more than ten rounds of ammunition. the president is also expected to ask congo reinstate the assault weapons ban. as for executive orders, are the president's expected to seek aggressive prosecution for those who break existing laws. for example, people who lie during background checks. the white house will be joined by children from around the country who wrote letters to him following the newtown shooting. this is not the first time the white house brought in special guests for the backdrop of a major announcement. recently middle class taxpayers were invited to the white house before a presidential speech on extending tax rates. >>> conservative media mogul rupert murdoch offered his thoughts on twitter. hopefully we'll get real actions on guns tomorrow, not some stage-managed stunt. >>> new

was very, very pleased with what i heard from the president and the work that the commission that joe biden heads. there are many steps in the right direction. starting with the executive orders. but the real the crux of the matter is the universal background checks. this is so common sense. it doesn't make any sense that anybody would be opposed to it. as you mentioned in the intro i just got back yesterday from spending time with newtown families. we were very privileged to be invited, roxanne who lost her daughter the same time i was shot and gabriel giffords was shot, to see her speak to families who are just starting this horrible road of grief that no parent should have to go through. it puts a human face on these statisticses that we keep throwing out. >> john: indeed. and i think that that's what is guiding the president through this proposed legislation. but i want to get back to john with the politics. if the senate pass this is package, and then the house kills it, what do you think happens next? and can the democrats benefit long-term if the house republicans demolish this poten

, but this is news what he just said. remember, when president obama asked joe biden to head up this effort looking at potential reform, remember, he initially said the effort was supposed to produce recommendations by the end of january. and so it was big news last week when we heard that vice president biden was actually planning to report to the president early. he wasn't waiting until the end of january. he was going to report in mid-january. he was planning on reporting hi recommendations by tomorrow, by tuesday. but then today at this press conference, we learned that actually, the vice president has already made his report to the president today. the vice president pushing up the time frame yet again. and president obama saying today that he will make further remarks later this week telling us what is going to happen next, given those recommendations. this is faster than the president even said it was going to happen. and he initially said it was going to happen fast. speed it turns out is central to the strategy. and that is turning out to be true both in washington and in the states that a
